SeaView's Sea Surface Temps

About:

Cleaner, more accurate SST information, posted within 2-3 hours of overpass, better cloud masking than other sources. 1 Day, 3 Day and Cloud Free Composites. This is highest Resolution SST Charts available. They are updated within hours of the satellite overpass and have extreme high positional accuracy. If you need the absolute best SST Charts available, this is the SST Charts that you want!

You get the following SST shots:

SST, most recent view loop
SST Contours + loop
SST, 1 day composite view loop
SST, 3 day composite view loop
SST, cloud-free composite view loop
SST, cloud-free mosaic (lo res)view loop

Using SeaView's SST Shots

You want to start with the Most Recent SST....If that does not have the area you are looking for covered....move to the SST 1 Day Composite.....if that does not have data for the area you want move to the 3 day etc....

Why this way? The SST"Most Recent" is the single "Most Recent" pass. We post it 8 mins after the data is available. It will have the BEST resolution. The 1 day Composite is ALL of the shots today laid over top of each other to fill in all the area. It is then averaged. The 3 day is the same process but over 3 days and so on.

Sample Image of the Cloud-Free Composite:

How to Display the SSTs

(1) Under the Sea View tab in Supermap, select the SST option of your choice - 1 day, 3 day, cloud free, whatever you want - OR - select a LOOP to view an interactive animation of the shots in daily order.

(2) If you did NOT select the Loop, you will get a popup on your right of the past few days shots. Click on the image of your choice to display it on the map - OR - select a temperature range beside the image to display on your map.

(3) Hold your mouse pointer over the area you want a reading for. The temperature reading will be pulled for that Lat/Long coordinate and display in the blue Temp box at the bottom of the screen.

SST Color Ramps

In Fla the temps can be real close together some times. Try a different color range selection to see the temp breaks better.

Q: The SST, most recent under Seaview show very different pics from the one under MODIS satellite...in fact, it looks like the MODIS satellite (free service) has the better quality pics...am I missing something here, or does it change on any given day.

A: It changes on any given day. The Seaview Shots tend to pull out any data that seems out of place... the Modis shot you get whatever is there. You might also try playing with the color ramps/ranges.
