The National Park Service is currently planning for the future of Gulf Islands National Seashore. The current management plan was finalized in 1978 and no longer adequately addresses the issues facing the national seashore, according to their reports.
They have drafted four alternative plans to choose from. The plan favored eliminates boat access to Johnson Beach, Fort Pickens, Naval Live Oaks and many more Gulf Islands National Seashore properties along the Gulf Coast. This change is being considered to eliminate damage to the sea grass by boats, but many will agree that the grass is currently very healthy.
The four different alternatives are included in a 432-page document presented by the National Park Service. This document can be downloaded from the website at www.parkplanning.nps.gov. It has the four different alternatives divided so interested outdoorsmen can see the differences with each one.
There are also changes that could be made to the road access to the different parks. One of those includes the Fort Pickens Road, which may not be rebuilt if ever damaged by another storm.
The preferred plan also has options to issue camping permits at Fort McRae and other popular camp sites on the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Currently no permit is needed to camp on these sites, and if the alternative is passed, campers could begin being ticketed.
They held two open houses in October, but now have scheduled two more due to the increase of people finding out about the possible changes. No formal presentations will be given, but there will be opportunities to learn about the plan and discuss it with park staff.
The first open house will be in Gulf Breeze on Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center at 1801 Gulf Breeze Parkway. The second will be Nov. 10 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Mississippi at the Davis Bayou Visitor Center at 3500 Park Road, Ocean Springs.
Officials are also accepting comments through the website, by email and regular mail. Comments can be made online on the website by going to "projects open for comment" and clicking on Gulf Coast. Email comments should be sent to GUIS_GMP@nps.gov and regular mail to Superintendent, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Attention: GUIS GMP, 1801 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze, FL 32563.
The public comment period was initially set to end on Nov. 11 but has been extended to Dec. 9.
