Seems like the data has been really bad lately. Is this all due to cloud cover? Does the subscription service really resolve a lot of that? Am I missing something completely with what I'm looking at on the maps possibly?
Thanks! |

Clouds can be a real pain in getting good shots / data. I assume you are talking about how bad the Chloro shots are? (The SST shots have been pretty good.)
As far as Chloro goes, the planet is viewed by satellites three times a day for chlorophyll: once by SeaWiFS, once by MODIS-Terra, and once by MODIS-Aqua (which is what we have in Supermap), so you actually have three opportunities to view the ocean every day, where its not cloudy. The ocean color sensors just simply can't see through clouds.
SeaView subscription is awesome. They do a helluva good job with data & cloud masking. I'm not just saying that either - lol - Take a look at a few of the past few days SeaView composite shots. These are where I pull my readings from when the MODIS-a is crappy... |

Yes, the chloro. The pics you posted are much better. The composite uses data from all 3 images I guess?
Dang. Wish there was a trial for the full monty. |

I've heard a few members asking about a free demo / trial. I think it would be a great idea.
Capt Dave, what do you think about that? Possible? |

Merry X-Mas, I added you 7 days of full access.

Thanks! So, is the plankton in the SeaView basically the same as the chloro on the free?? |

Chlorophyll and Plankton go hand in hand. This is how NASA puts it for those who may be wondering: Microscopic marine plants (phytoplankton) contain chlorophyll, a green pigment they use during photosynthesis. Using satellite sensors, they can measure chlorophyll concentrations in oceans, lakes and seas to indicate the distribution and abundance of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are the base of the marine food chain and, therefore, are a good indicator of the abundance of life in a body of water.
Here's a side by side comparison of the free Chlorophyll from MODIS & Seaview's plankton density. You can see the similarities. |
