Florida anglers land huge swordfish
Wed, Oct 28, 2009
Angler Drew Thompson, fishing out of Palm Beach, Florida, with Capt. Anthony Mendillo and Capt. Bill Davis, brought this 588-pound swordfish to the docks at Sailfish Marina Sunday night. The behemoth sword is about 20-pounds shy of the state record and one of the largest swords caught in Florida since the recent resurgence of the sport fishery. The fish easily broke the previous 452-pound dock record.
The anglers were in about 2000 feet of water when they hooked into the fish. After a fighting the sword an estimated 300 feet down for over four hours, the fish died and sunk to the bottom. It then had to then be hand-lined up. The sword was caught on Rods by Dru without an electric reel.
Faced with the daunting task of getting the fish in the boat, the anglers tied a float to the tail in order to get the rest of the catch up through the transom door. With the head of the fish poking into the salon, the crew headed back to the dock to weigh their prize.

| 5 hour fight with a 588 lb fish is exhausting. Stellar crew there. |
