FISHSKA WRITE-UP:

SARASOTA, FLORIDA. Mike Rinaldo’s Never-E-Nuff team has done well over the years fishing SKA events. Last year he finished tenth and second in ’06 in Division eleven, but the team has never won an event, that is till the 14th annual Sarasota Sertoma Kingfish Tournament, the season opener for division 6.

Rinaldo’s team of Devin Sanderson, Spencer Bass, and James Heinbaugh, went south of Boca Grande. It was one of those days you’d kind of like to just stay in bed. Winds blowing to 25 miles per hour out of the southwest made things just tolerable, but the Yamaha powered Contender team had a game plan. They had pre-fished the area and believed there was a good king there.

“We were fishing in 45 feet of water,” explained Rinaldo. Shortly after noon something hit the short line and Devin picked up the rod. Spencer got behind the wheel and I waited patiently with the gaff. As we ran the fish down, Devin kept saying that this was a good fish. We were relieved when the fish came over the gunwale. In fact, it was the only strike we had all day.”

Back at the scale the fish tipped the scale at 43.62 pounds, enough for the win and all the accolades. Life is good!

Look out Division 6 participants, here comes the ProMarineUSA.com /Penny Wise team. When they get a good start, they’re hard to beat. At the season opener for Division 6 they scaled a 42.66 to earn second. Wouldn’t you love to start the season with this fish?

Ken Dellane, Chris Terry, and Michael Penny started 150 miles south of Sarasota where they heard there was a good bite earlier in the week. With a no check out in this years event, teams had the option of trailering anywhere on the west coast, catch their fish, then run to the scales on the boats bottom. In 3 to 5 foot seas it wasn’t the most comfortable ride, but when you want the win, explainable.

“It was our first bait in the water that got hit,” said Dellane. “ It was just about seven, when she ate a blue runner. Mike skillfully brought her to the boat and I stuck her with the gaff. Pretty basic really, the way we like them.”

With the Penny Wise finishing second, it gave Yamaha and Contender both first and second in the event.

The Bonnell’s, Matthew, Jeremy, Sandra, Vernon, and Chris, got the double dip this weekend, they picked up third in the tournament plus first place money in the class of 23.

Fishing their Yamaha powered Bluewater, Bandit; the team fished the beach in thirty feet of water. “She hit a blue runner on a long line,’ explained Matthew who is also part of the ’06 Class of 23 National Champions team. “It was an area we’ve fished before. We must have had twenty small fish but after working thru some of those we got our 34.40. I was on the rod and Jeremy was the gaff man.” A great start for this super family team!

Steve Papen also wanted to start the season strong and thanks to his team of Corey Alley and Brian Simmons, did just that. Fishing another Yamaha powered Contender, Lagerhead, at the T-Tower the team brought a 32.66 over the gunwale around 11 am.

“We were in 65 feet of water when she hit a blue runner on a short line,” said Papen, who is no stranger to the limelight, having won the PAL and the Gator’s event in ’07. “Brian did a great job on the rod and Corey was ready when he got the fish to within gaff range.”

Todd Parish, Jeffri Durrance, Ryan Parrish, Jim Long, Joe Bazenas are having a great season so far. In this event they pick up fifth place with a 32.38. The Top Down team, fishing a Mercury powered Donzi, should finish in the top ten in Division 11 and qualify for the Championship in November, but they could even do better in Division 6 after this start.

“I have to confess,” said Parrish. “It was Mike Rinaldo who put us in the area. Our king ate a blue runner on the surface at eleven thirty. Jeffri caught the king and I gaffed her.”

Sam Maisano’s Insta Gator team caught a 31.83 to pick up sixth. Equally important Sam took his nephew, Marlin Rice, son of Sid Rice our host at the Gator’s events, fishing with them and you guessed it, Marlin was our top junior angler. The team scaled a 31.83.

Rounding out the money place in the Open Class was Danny Clark’s Constant Chaos with a 30.78.

The Reel Gator picked up second place in the Class of 23 with a 29.16. “We were in the same place as the Bandit,” said team Captain Mike Smith. “We can’t thank the Bonnell’s enough. We didn’t catch our king till after two o’clock. We went thru so many small fish we had to get more bait. But then we had a great strike on a flat line tagged with a nice Spanish Mackerel. It was a good event for us.” Kyle Hunter picked up third place junior angler fishing the Reel Gator.

John McLay’s Outta Line team took the last money spot in the Class of 23. The team scaled a 27.63.

Gavin Pagan earned the $500 Mercury Outboards College Scholarship Certificate fishing the Rum Runner thanks to scaling a 30.15. Great job Gavin!

After 13 years of producing this great fund-raiser for the local Sertoma chapter, Sandy Blowers added another to his list of accomplishments. He and his volunteers are a great asset to the community and produce one of the best events we do on Florida’s west coast. Congratulations Sandy!
