We headed out the pass @ 0600-ish into some sloppy confused sea's. The waves weren't big, just nasty. Put baits in the water at about 270' and trolled for a half hour with 2 back to back knockdowns and nothing to show for it. Ran out deeper (~12 miles from the De Soto Canyon)and pulled for a few hours more with nothing to show for it. We then saw a lot of boats working one area so we headed there and found a big weed line a few miles south of the Nipple. We ended up pulling 3 P-nut dolphin off of it and lost 3 more There were literally HUNDREDS of Dolphin there. It didn't matter where you looked, you could see them. They were just finicky. We saw 2 Wahoo but couldn't get them to hit anything. We also had a Blue Marlin in our spread that I had hooked up for about 30 seconds until he spit the hook. That's 2 weekends in a row where I have been hooked up with the man in the blue suit. I'm not sure if I'm getting lucky or if I have my trolling pattern down just right.

No you are not doing anything wrong. The water is nasty green due to overflow from the Mississippi. If you find fingers of good clean blue water then you will find fish.

It's more experience than help. You basically have to put your time in and learn from the actual fishing excursions. Look for rips and floating debris and weedlines also.

I kinda know what to look for and I have studied a whole lot. Most of my experience has been trolling inshore and out around the edge. Last year I ventured to the nipple for the first time and caught my first blackfin. I figure it had to do a lot with time on the water and trial and error

Learning to read the sings goes along long way too. Always watch for working birds, they are a dead giveaway of fish activity.
