Did not want to hijack Amanda's 80W post. But for 30s I am not looking at the capacity that you have on an 80 plus I am looking to use these for everything from kings to tuna. I am thinking 65lb braid 900yds and a hundred yards of 60-80 lbs mono topshot?? Too much for kings??

fishing out of a 23 ft boat, spool them with straight mono. what is your primary use? where do you fish out of? what is the target? if you think you're going for bruiser yellowfin at the rigs. try spooling one with braid and a topshot, see how you like it. straight mono keeps it easy, and i think that there is less to worry about. now if you are going out to the dumping grounds looking to kill a blue with a 30, you might want the braid afterall.

I am fishing the NC coast now but will be moving to Destin in the next year. Mostly looking at kings and dolphin but would really like to get a chance to do some tuna fishing here and down in Fl when I get there. I have no issue running my 23 ft boat 45-50 miles offshore in the right conditions. I'm thinking that by putting on the braid backing I am set for a monster but not hurting my "normal" trolling setup.

What kind of 30's? Make/model?

If they are beefy ones like tiagra's, go with 80lb JB white hollowcore and topshot. You don't need 900yds of line on any reel. If a fish gets 300yds off, chances are you have lost it already.

TIAGRA 30As, I'm listening. I usually end up changing things around a few times with new gear before I get it right. I'm hoping to do this one right the first time, and to be realistic about it.

Looks like 130 lb JBHC is a bit cheaper than the 80lb any reason not to go big with 130lbs for backing?

Well, you don't want to totally shoot yourself on capacity. The price difference is because the 80 has a lot more filaments/carriers which makes it alot smoother. I would reserve the 130 for 50's and 200 for 80's.

On our International 30w's we are using straight mono, just like Capt John Mallete had on them when we bought them from him. I want to say 40#.

30s are def. overkill for targettiing Kings but you can use them if you want, nothing really wrong with it.

Hooters, Mahi, AJs, Blackfin. (YFT is such a rarity out of Destin pass w/o the right conditions, this year sucked.) I have never been worried about losing a fish with the way ours are setup.

Just my opinion.

So your fighting wahoo on 40lb mono? Guess you've got to work them just right or am I trying to super over rig my reels (again). 5-600 yds of 40 lbs mono per reel would not break the bank at all.

You can catch just about every wahoo that swims on 40# mono. we used to wear them out from Canaveral.

Super cool, an easy straight mono setup is far less complicated and far less expensive.

I'll be honest with you, I prefer mono to braid while trolling because of the stretch. It allows a few wrinkles without costing you too many fish.

Yep. Your leader & drag settings are important too. We've caught 35-40lb Kings, big Cobia, & even a cpl wahoo on a Penn Spinfisher spinner with 25-30# test on it...(the "surprise" hooters had to be chased to get some line back but nonetheless...) Scott even hoisted up a near 100# shark off the bottom with that reel last year. A spooling of mono would be my suggestion for sure. You can always chase it down if you get extremely low. Very Happy

Now if you're going out for Billfish like Bandit1 said, then I'd re-think the situation. Cool

Stick with mono. There's not many fish out of Destin winthin 50 or 60 miles that a Tiagra 30 won't handle. Don't worry about Yellowfin or Marlin because they are hit or miss most of the year within most of us's reach. If you want to put braid on them go ahead that's not for me to tell you no but for what you'll catch around here just go with mono. Make strong leaders and connections and don't try to pull the fish to the boat in a hurry. Wear him out first.

Not in the long run. Spectra lasts for years and years and it takes 10 minutes to change out your top shots a few times a year, depending on how much you fish. Changing out full spools of mono takes time and will equal the same cost over the long run. by changing out your top shots, its like spooling up with nice new clear mono.
